A refined kacho-ga study by Yamamoto Baiitsu, depicting seasonal autumn flora and rock formations in the traditional Bunjinga style.
Yamamoto Baiitsu was a prominent figure in the Nagoya Bunjinga (literati painting) circle during the late Edo period. This work, Flowers and Grasses of Autumn, demonstrates his technical precision in the kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) tradition. The composition features a vertical arrangement of seasonal flora, including chrysanthemums and hibiscus, anchored by a weathered rock formation. Baiitsu employs a refined brush technique, balancing controlled outlines with subtle washes of colour to define the petals and foliage.
Unlike the more rigid academic styles of the time, Baiitsu drew inspiration from Chinese Ming and Qing dynasty painting manuals. His approach to the subject matter is observational, yet it adheres to the classical conventions of the literati school, which valued the expression of the artist's inner character through the depiction of nature. The silk support provides a soft, absorbent surface that allows for the delicate layering of pigments, resulting in a muted palette that reflects the transition of the seasons.
In this piece, the artist captures the specific textures of the plants: the serrated edges of the leaves, the soft density of the chrysanthemum blooms, and the rigid, upright growth of the grasses. The rock is rendered with darker, more gestural ink strokes, providing a stable base for the lighter, more ephemeral floral elements above. The inclusion of calligraphy and red seals in the upper left corner is characteristic of the period, serving as both a signature and an aesthetic component of the overall design. This print captures the quiet observation of the natural world, a hallmark of Baiitsu's mature style, offering a view into the artistic sensibilities of nineteenth-century Japan.
