Fish and Frogs is a woodcut by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, completed in 1949. This work demonstrates the artist's preoccupation with tessellation, a process where shapes interlock to cover a plane without gaps or overlaps. Escher explores the transition between two distinct biological forms, the aquatic fish and the amphibious frog, through a systematic geometric arrangement.

The composition is divided into two primary zones. The upper section features dark, silhouetted fish swimming against a horizontally lined background. As the eye moves downward, these forms undergo a metamorphosis. The negative space around the fish begins to take the shape of frogs, which eventually emerge as the dominant, light-coloured figures in the lower portion of the print. Escher uses the contrast between black and white ink to define these boundaries, ensuring that each figure remains distinct while simultaneously functioning as a component of the other's outline.

Escher was not a mathematician by training, yet his work frequently engages with mathematical principles. In this piece, he employs a regular division of the plane to create a sense of order. The repetition of the figures creates a rhythmic quality, drawing the viewer into a cycle of transformation. The artist's signature, MCE, is visible in the lower left corner, integrated into the design. This print is a clear example of how Escher manipulated simple shapes to construct complex visual puzzles, requiring the viewer to shift their focus between the foreground and background elements to fully comprehend the structure of the image.
