Day and Night is a woodcut print by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, completed in 1938. This work demonstrates his interest in tessellation and the transformation of forms. The composition depicts a Dutch polder landscape, divided into two distinct halves that mirror one another. On the left, the scene is bathed in daylight, while the right side is shrouded in darkness.

At the centre of the image, the fields transform into the silhouettes of birds. These shapes undergo a metamorphosis as they move across the horizon. The black birds flying towards the right gradually shift into white birds flying towards the left. This transition relies on the principle of figure-ground reversal, where the negative space of one set of birds becomes the positive form of the other.

Escher utilised two separate woodblocks to achieve the stark contrast between the black and white ink. The geometric precision of the fields, which resemble a chessboard, provides a structured base for the fluid movement of the birds above. The architecture at the bottom of the print, featuring traditional Dutch houses and windmills, remains consistent on both sides, further emphasising the symmetry of the composition.

This print is a primary example of Escher's mathematical approach to art. He avoids traditional perspective in favour of a logical, repeating structure that challenges the viewer's perception of space and time. The work remains a clear representation of his ability to merge rigorous geometry with imaginative visual narratives. By stripping away colour, Escher focuses entirely on the interplay of light, shadow, and form, creating a balanced visual experience that remains consistent with his broader body of graphic work.
