A detailed 19th-century Indian miniature painting depicting the tragic climax of the romance between Farhad and Shirin.
This miniature painting by Amar Das Bhatti depicts a tragic episode from the Persian romance of Khosrow and Shirin. The narrative centres on the sculptor Farhad, who, upon receiving false intelligence regarding the death of his beloved Shirin, takes his own life. The composition follows the conventions of Pahari painting, where the scene is divided into distinct zones of action and setting.
To the left, the fallen figure of Farhad lies near a stream, his posture conveying the finality of his act. Nearby, a group of figures, including a woman who appears to be Shirin, reacts with visible distress. The artist employs a flattened perspective, common in this tradition, to organise the various elements of the story within a single frame. The background features stylised rock formations and a distant town, rendered with a decorative sensibility that prioritises clarity of narrative over realistic depth.
In the foreground, a blue horse stands as a witness to the scene, adding a touch of courtly elegance to the otherwise sombre subject. The palette is dominated by warm yellows, earthy browns, and the striking blue of the horse, all applied with the precision characteristic of Indian miniature traditions. The use of gold highlights adds a refined quality to the garments and decorative details. This work demonstrates the skill of the artist in balancing the emotional weight of the literary source with the formal requirements of the miniature format. The figures are rendered with delicate lines, and the overall arrangement creates a sense of ordered tragedy, typical of the period's approach to illustrating classical tales. The work serves as a window into the artistic practices of the 19th-century Indian courts, where such stories were frequently commissioned for private collections.
