This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book Famous Products of Ryūkō (Ryūkō meibutsu shi), published around 1787. The work provides a visual catalogue of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, documenting the figures and customs associated with the area. The title, Ryūkō, serves as a poetic reference to the willow-lined streets of the district, while the term meibutsu refers to local specialties or notable items.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels. The right panel depicts a group of courtesans, their kimonos decorated with patterns that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period. Their hair is styled in elaborate arrangements, typical of the high-ranking women of the pleasure quarters. The left panel introduces a more symbolic element, featuring a kadomatsu, a traditional Japanese decoration made of pine and bamboo, placed near a water barrel. This inclusion suggests a seasonal context, specifically the New Year period, which was a time of significant activity and celebration within the district.
Kabocha Sōen employs a refined line quality, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greens, and warm paper tones to create a balanced visual experience. The text integrated into the upper sections of the print consists of kyōka, or comic verse, which was a popular literary form among the urban population of the time. These poems often provide commentary on the subjects depicted, adding a layer of wit to the visual representation. This print functions as both a record of contemporary fashion and a piece of social documentation, capturing the atmosphere of the Yoshiwara through a combination of illustration and calligraphy.
