A detailed steel engraving by Richard Austin Artlett depicting the equestrian monument of Viscount Henry Hardinge, rendered with technical precision.
This steel engraving by Richard Austin Artlett depicts the equestrian monument of Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge, a prominent British military commander and statesman. The print is based on a drawing by F. Roffe, capturing the formal, commemorative nature of 19th-century public sculpture. The composition follows the classical tradition of the equestrian portrait, where the subject is shown mounted on a horse, symbolising authority and command.
Viscount Hardinge is portrayed in military attire, complete with a cloak and sword, seated atop a horse captured in a controlled, rearing pose. The artist employs precise line work to render the textures of the uniform, the musculature of the horse, and the architectural solidity of the pedestal. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of tonal variation, creating a sense of volume and weight that mimics the physical presence of the original bronze or stone sculpture.
Artlett, a skilled engraver of the Victorian era, was known for his work in various publications, including the Art Journal. His ability to translate three-dimensional sculptural forms into two-dimensional prints was highly regarded. This work provides a clear record of the commemorative aesthetics of the period, reflecting the public desire to memorialise military figures through grand, static imagery. The clean background and focus on the central figure ensure that the viewer's attention remains on the subject's posture and the symbolic elements of his rank. This print is a representative example of the technical proficiency found in mid-19th-century British printmaking, where the focus was on clarity, anatomical accuracy, and the faithful reproduction of sculptural detail for a wider audience.
