Beschreibung
A 1436 fresco by Paolo Uccello depicting the English mercenary Sir John Hawkwood, painted to resemble a stone monument within the Florence Cathedral.
Paolo Uccello painted this fresco in 1436 for the interior wall of the Florence Cathedral. It commemorates the English mercenary Sir John Hawkwood, who served the Florentine Republic during the fourteenth century. The work functions as a painted substitute for a three-dimensional bronze monument, a common practice in the period for honouring military figures.
Uccello demonstrates his preoccupation with perspective and geometry throughout the composition. The base of the monument is depicted from a lower viewpoint, while the horse and rider are shown from a direct, side-on perspective. This dual-viewpoint approach creates a sense of monumental scale, despite the flat nature of the wall surface. The artist uses a monochromatic palette of earth tones, suggesting the appearance of stone or bronze sculpture against a dark background. The horse is captured in a measured, walking gait, with the rider holding a baton, a symbol of his military command.
The frame surrounding the monument is painted with decorative motifs, adding to the illusion of a physical structure attached to the cathedral wall. The Latin inscription on the plinth identifies the subject and confirms the artist's authorship. This work remains a primary example of the transition from Gothic traditions to the mathematical rigour of the early Renaissance. Uccello's focus on the structural integrity of the forms and the precise application of linear perspective reflects the intellectual climate of fifteenth-century Florence. The work provides a clear view of how artists of the era experimented with spatial depth and the representation of classical subjects within a religious space.
