A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ryūsai Shigeharu depicting a courtesan in costume, originating from the Osaka school of the nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Ryūsai Shigeharu depicts Ei, a woman from the Nakamoriken brothel, portrayed in the guise of the legendary Lady Huayang. The work belongs to the series Costume Parade of the Shimanouchi District in Osaka (Naniwa Shimanouchi nerimono). Shigeharu was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, which flourished in the Osaka region during the nineteenth century. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often focused on kabuki actors, Osaka artists frequently documented the local courtesans and the elaborate processions that defined the social life of the city.
The figure stands before a horizontal railing, holding a flowering branch. Her kimono is decorated with floral motifs, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the period. The colour palette relies on soft earth tones, muted blues, and accents of red, which were typical of the pigments available to Osaka printmakers at the time. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure echoed by the floral stem and the cartouche in the upper left corner. This cartouche provides the specific context for the print, identifying the subject and her association with the patron Yamamura Goto.
Shigeharu captures the subject with a sense of poise. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block. The paper texture and the subtle ink absorption reflect the traditional methods of the Ukiyo-e tradition. This piece offers a view into the cultural customs of the Shimanouchi district, where the boundaries between theatrical performance and daily life were often blurred through these public costume parades. The work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the Kamigata print style, favouring a refined approach to portraiture and costume detail.
