Beschreibung
A visceral, expressionist depiction of a soldier in the First World War, painted by Otto Dix in 1917.
Otto Dix produced this work during his service in the First World War. As a machine gunner on both the Western and Eastern fronts, his direct experience of combat shaped his artistic output. This painting captures the visceral reality of the battlefield through a lens of raw, unvarnished observation. The composition focuses on the physical disintegration of the human form, using a palette dominated by dark, earthy tones punctuated by sharp, arterial reds and acidic yellows.
The brushwork is aggressive and thick, reflecting the chaotic environment of the trenches. Dix avoids romanticising the conflict, choosing instead to document the trauma and suffering he witnessed. The figure is rendered with a sense of urgency, where the boundaries between the soldier and the surrounding debris become blurred. This approach is characteristic of his early work, which sought to strip away the veneer of heroism often associated with military service in the early twentieth century.
This piece belongs to a broader body of work in which Dix processed his wartime experiences. By rejecting traditional academic techniques, he created a visual language capable of conveying the psychological and physical toll of industrialised warfare. The painting functions as a direct record of the period, offering a stark perspective on the human cost of the conflict. It remains a significant example of how artists of the era responded to the trauma of the Great War, moving away from representational accuracy toward a more subjective, emotive depiction of reality. The work is held in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, which houses a large archive of the artist's output from this period.
