A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting a quiet morning view of Mount Fuji from the Hakone region.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, produced this woodblock print during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition captures a serene morning scene near Hakone, a location historically significant for its position along the Tōkaidō road. Mount Fuji appears in the distance, its peak partially obscured by the atmospheric conditions of dawn.
The print employs a restrained colour palette, relying on soft blues and muted earth tones to convey the quietude of the early morning. A small structure sits atop a rocky outcrop on the left, while a larger building is positioned among trees on the right. A winding path and a bridge connect the foreground elements, guiding the viewer's eye toward the mountain. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy adds a layer of textual information, typical of the period's print culture, where poetry often accompanied visual imagery to provide context or emotional resonance.
Kuniyoshi is often associated with dynamic warrior prints, yet his work in the genre of meisho-e (pictures of famous places) demonstrates his ability to handle atmospheric perspective and natural forms. The print utilises the woodblock medium to create distinct textures, particularly in the rendering of the rocky terrain and the foliage. The lines remain precise, defining the architectural elements against the softer, more organic shapes of the hills and clouds. This work provides a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the observation of nature and the documentation of travel routes were central to the artistic output of the time. The print is a representative example of the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour layer requires careful alignment to achieve the final image.
