The Deposition from the Cross, executed between 1432 and 1434, is a defining work of the Early Renaissance. Originally commissioned for the Strozzi Chapel in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence, the panel displays the transition from the International Gothic style toward the spatial clarity of the Quattrocento. Fra Angelico began the work, though Lorenzo Monaco is credited with the initial design of the pinnacles and the upper sections.

The composition is organised around the central act of lowering Christ from the cross. A ladder provides a vertical axis, while the figures are arranged in a semi-circular formation that creates a sense of depth and physical presence. The palette is characterised by clear, luminous colours, including soft pinks, blues, and ochres, which contrast against the dark, atmospheric sky. The figures exhibit a calm, measured grief, avoiding excessive emotional display in favour of a quiet, devotional focus.

In the background, a detailed cityscape represents Jerusalem, rendered with the architectural precision typical of the period. The foreground is populated by a group of mourners, including the Virgin Mary and various saints, whose garments are painted with attention to volume and drapery. The frame itself is an integral part of the piece, featuring smaller painted figures in the pilasters and pinnacles, which maintain the continuity of the narrative. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance theological narrative with the emerging interest in human anatomy and naturalistic space. The clarity of light and the precise placement of figures within the pictorial field allow the viewer to engage with the scene as a coherent, unified event. It remains a primary example of Florentine painting from the early fifteenth century, reflecting the shift toward humanistic observation within a strictly religious context.
