Beschreibung
A classic Early Renaissance depiction of the Flagellation of Christ by Sandro Botticelli, focusing on anatomical precision and narrative clarity.
This work depicts the biblical scene of the Flagellation of Christ, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Italian Renaissance. Sandro Botticelli, working in Florence during the late fifteenth century, presents a composition focused on the central figure of Christ bound to a column. He is flanked by two tormentors, whose dynamic poses and physical exertion contrast with the stillness of the central figure. The artist employs a clear, linear style, characteristic of his early period, which emphasises the anatomical structure of the figures and the clarity of the narrative action.
The palette is balanced, with the pale, luminous flesh tones of Christ set against the more saturated garments of the figures surrounding him. The architectural elements are minimal, serving to frame the action rather than provide a deep spatial environment. This focus on the human form and the emotional weight of the scene is typical of the Florentine school, which prioritised drawing and proportion. Botticelli uses light to model the musculature and to define the contours of the bodies, creating a sense of volume that is both precise and controlled.
While the subject is one of suffering, the treatment remains restrained. The figures are arranged in a manner that directs the viewer's attention to the central event, maintaining a sense of order and balance. The work reflects the artistic concerns of the time, where the study of classical antiquity and the human body informed the representation of religious narratives. This print captures the fine details of the original tempera technique, preserving the clarity of line and the subtle transitions of tone that define Botticelli's early approach to religious iconography.

The Flagellation of Christ - Sandro Botticelli
Artist Biography
Sandro Botticelli
He worked in Florence under the patronage of the Medici family during the period art historians call the Early Renaissance. The Birth of Venus and Primavera, both painted in the 1480s, are his best-known works and among the most reproduced images in Western art. They are strange paintings. Venus stands on a shell, blown to shore by the wind, her body curved in a way that owes nothing to anatomical reality and everything to Gothic line. Primavera fills a dark orange grove with mythological figures whose feet barely touch the ground.
The paintings are technically tempera on canvas and panel, executed with a fineness of line that reflects his goldsmith training. The outlines are visible. The surfaces are flat compared to the oil-based modelling that Leonardo and other contemporaries were developing. Botticelli was not interested in three-dimensional illusion. He was interested in contour, pattern, and the way a line can describe both a body and an emotion simultaneously.
His later career was affected by the rise of the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola, who preached against secular art and luxury. Botticelli may have burned some of his own paintings in the Bonfire of the Vanities in 1497. Whether this represents genuine religious conversion or political self-preservation is unclear. His output declined. He died in 1510, largely forgotten, and was not rediscovered until the Pre-Raphaelites championed him in the nineteenth century.
