A powerful late-period work by Vincent van Gogh, featuring his signature impasto technique and the iconic, flame-like cypress trees of the French countryside.
Painted in June 1890 during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, this work captures the towering, flame-like forms of cypress trees that fascinated Vincent van Gogh throughout his time in the south of France. The composition is dominated by the verticality of the dark, swirling evergreens, which contrast against a turbulent, cloud-filled sky. Van Gogh applied paint with thick, rhythmic impasto, creating a sense of constant motion across the canvas surface.
At the base of the trees, two figures are depicted in a quiet, almost incidental manner. Their presence provides a sense of scale to the massive, dark foliage that looms above them. The palette relies on deep greens, ochres, and cool blues, applied with the characteristic energy that defined his late period. The small building in the background, rendered with simpler, flatter strokes, anchors the scene within the rural environment of the French countryside.
Van Gogh often viewed the cypress as a symbol of mourning or a bridge between the earth and the sky. In this specific composition, the trees act as a powerful, dark anchor for the lighter, more fluid elements of the sky and the golden wheat fields below. The work demonstrates his ability to transform a natural subject into a subjective, emotional experience through colour and brushwork. The paint application remains heavy and tactile, preserving the physical evidence of his hand at work. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's preoccupation with the natural world during his final creative phase, where he sought to capture the energy of the environment rather than a literal transcription of the scene.
