This ink wash painting by Yamada Dōan represents the aesthetic principles of the Muromachi period. Dōan, a merchant and tea master, produced works that align with the wabi-sabi tradition, which finds beauty in simplicity and the natural state of objects. The composition features a cucumber and two eggplants, rendered with minimal brushwork on a neutral paper background.
The artist employs varying densities of ink to define the forms. The cucumber is depicted with a textured surface, while the leaves and stems are suggested through fluid, calligraphic strokes. The negative space surrounding the vegetables is as important as the subjects themselves, allowing the viewer to focus on the essential qualities of the produce. The work lacks elaborate detail, opting instead for a direct observation of nature that reflects the influence of Zen Buddhism on Japanese art.
Yamada Dōan was active in the 16th century and is associated with the development of tea culture in Sakai. His paintings often reflect the understated elegance required for the tea room. The presence of a red seal on the left side confirms the attribution to the artist. This piece is a clear example of the ink-wash tradition, where the economy of line and the control of ink tone create a sense of balance. The subject matter, while humble, is elevated through the artist's technical restraint and focus on form.
