A detailed etching by Domenico Cunego after Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco, depicting the Creation of Animals.
This print is an etching and engraving by the Italian artist Domenico Cunego, based on the fresco by Michelangelo Buonarroti located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The work depicts the fifth day of creation, where the Almighty separates the waters and brings forth living creatures. Cunego, a skilled reproductive engraver, captures the muscularity and dynamic movement characteristic of Michelangelo's High Renaissance style through precise line work and cross-hatching.
The composition focuses on the figure of God, who is shown in a foreshortened, powerful pose, surrounded by a swirling mantle and accompanied by putti. The artist employs a range of tonal values to suggest the volume of the drapery and the physical presence of the figures against a simplified background. The Latin inscription at the base, 'PRODVGANT AQVAE REPTILE ANIMAE VIVENTIS', references the biblical text from Genesis, grounding the visual narrative in its theological source.
Cunego was active in Rome during the eighteenth century and produced a series of prints documenting the frescoes of the Vatican. His technical approach relies on the clarity of the burin to translate the painterly qualities of the original fresco into a monochrome medium. The print serves as a record of the Sistine Chapel ceiling as it appeared in the eighteenth century, reflecting the period's interest in documenting and disseminating the works of the Italian masters. The attention to anatomical detail and the dramatic gesture of the central figure remain faithful to the original design, while the engraving style provides a distinct textural quality that differs from the smooth surface of the fresco. This piece is an example of the reproductive printmaking tradition that allowed European audiences to study the works of Michelangelo from a distance.
