A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyasu, depicting a courtesan in an elaborate butterfly-patterned kimono with a small dog.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyasu depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, in the guise of a high-ranking courtesan. Kuniyasu, a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni I, was active during the late Edo period. His work often focused on the fashion and social customs of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The subject wears an elaborate kimono decorated with butterfly motifs, a common design element in period textiles. Her hair is styled with multiple ornamental pins, indicating her status and the meticulous grooming expected of her profession.
At her feet, a small dog interacts with the long, trailing hem of her garment, adding a touch of domesticity to the composition. The print features a cartouche in the upper left corner, containing calligraphic text that provides context or poetic commentary, a standard feature of ukiyo-e prints of this era. The colour palette relies on muted tones, including soft pinks, deep blacks, and subtle blues, which have aged to provide a characteristic vintage aesthetic.
The composition is balanced, with the figure standing in a graceful, slightly curved posture that directs the viewer's eye across the details of her attire. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical skill required for woodblock carving during the early nineteenth century. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the depiction of courtesans served as a primary vehicle for exploring contemporary fashion and feminine beauty. The work remains a representative example of the ukiyo-e tradition, capturing the intersection of art, commerce, and social performance in historical Japan.
