A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utamaro II, featuring a graceful courtesan adorned with morning-glories and a dragon-patterned kimono.
This woodblock print by Utamaro II depicts a courtesan, a figure central to the Ukiyo-e genre, which focused on the floating world of Edo-period Japan. The artist, who assumed the name of his master, Kitagawa Utamaro, maintains the stylistic conventions of the school, prioritising elegant line work and the depiction of fashionable attire. The subject is shown in a graceful pose, her hair adorned with numerous hairpins, a common indicator of status within the pleasure districts.
The composition is balanced by the inclusion of morning-glories, which frame the figure and provide a seasonal context. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, typical of the period, to draw attention to the patterns on the courtesan's kimono. The garment features a prominent dragon motif, a detail that adds a layer of visual complexity to the otherwise serene portrait. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and deliberate colour application.
Utamaro II was active during the early 19th century, continuing the tradition of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. His work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the time, where the focus remained on the poise and sartorial choices of the urban elite. The print is a representative example of the genre, capturing the intersection of fashion, nature, and portraiture. The paper shows signs of age, which provides a sense of its historical provenance as a surviving artefact of the Edo period. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the era, where the depiction of the courtesan served as a primary subject for artists and a source of fascination for the public.
