A traditional ukiyo-e hanging scroll depicting a high-ranking courtesan in a formal procession, accompanied by her attendants.
This hanging scroll depicts a high-ranking courtesan during an oiran dochu, or procession, a common subject within the ukiyo-e tradition. Miyagawa Isshō, a student of Miyagawa Chōshun, captures the figure in a moment of measured movement. The courtesan wears a layered kimono, her posture upright and controlled, while two young attendants, or kamuro, flank her. A male attendant follows behind, holding a large umbrella to shield her from the elements. The composition relies on the contrast between the figures and the expansive, neutral background of the silk, which draws attention to the textile patterns and the colour palette of the garments.
Isshō was active during the mid-Edo period, a time when the pleasure districts of Yoshiwara provided constant inspiration for artists. The work demonstrates the focus on fashion and social status typical of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. The artist employs a refined line to delineate the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the faces. The colour scheme is restrained, relying on deep reds, blacks, and muted earth tones, which provides a sense of balance to the scene. The figures are arranged in a procession that suggests a narrative beyond the frame, typical of the genre's interest in the daily lives of urban celebrities. This print captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the period, where the art of dress and the performance of social roles were central to the cultural output of the time. The scroll format itself dictates the vertical orientation, allowing for the elegant, elongated proportions of the central figure to dominate the visual field.
