This hanging scroll depicts a courtesan, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Matsuno Chikanobu, active during the early eighteenth century, employs a style characteristic of the Kaigetsudo school. The figure occupies the pictorial space with a sense of volume, her posture defined by the heavy, sweeping lines of her kimono. The artist focuses on the textile patterns, which include floral motifs and geometric shapes, rendered with precision against the neutral background of the silk.
The composition follows the conventions of the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. The courtesan is shown in a three-quarter view, her gaze directed away from the viewer.
