This work by Kaigetsudō Anchi represents the distinct style of the Kaigetsudō school, which flourished in the early 18th century. The school is known for its focus on bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, typically depicting courtesans from the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo. The figure stands in a graceful, S-shaped posture, a hallmark of the school's approach to portraying the female form. Her kimono is decorated with large, bold floral motifs, which contrast with the geometric checkerboard patterns on the hem and sleeves. The artist uses strong, confident ink lines to define the contours of the figure and the folds of the fabric, creating a sense of volume and movement despite the two-dimensional nature of the composition.
The Kaigetsudō artists prioritised the physical presence of the subject over background detail. By omitting scenery, the artist directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figure's attire and posture. The signature and seal of the artist appear on the lower left, confirming the work's origin within the school's production. This piece is an example of the 'big-head' or large-scale figure prints that defined the early Ukiyo-e period. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of works from this era, providing a tactile quality to the monochrome ink application.
