A delicate Symbolist study by Antoon Derkinderen, featuring two figures within an architectural frame, rendered in graphite and watercolour.
This work by the Dutch artist Antoon Derkinderen displays the characteristic restraint and symbolic clarity of his graphic output. Derkinderen, a figure associated with the Symbolist movement in the Netherlands, often turned to medieval motifs and classical themes to construct his compositions. The title, Convenit Felicibus, translates from Latin as 'it is fitting for the happy', a sentiment reflected in the serene, ritualistic interaction between the two figures depicted.
The composition is framed by an architectural arch supported by two columns, a device that provides a sense of enclosure and sacred space. Within this frame, one figure stands while the other sits, engaged in a quiet, domestic task involving a spindle. The use of line is precise and delicate, suggesting the preparatory nature of the drawing. The application of watercolour is sparing, confined to specific areas such as the blue background, the green ground, and the warm tones of the floor and hanging lamp. This selective use of colour directs the viewer's attention to the central action and the symbolic weight of the objects.
Derkinderen was deeply influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and the desire to integrate art into everyday life, particularly through book design and typography. His work often features a flat, decorative quality that prioritises rhythm and balance over three-dimensional realism. The border, with its repeating geometric patterns, reinforces this decorative intent, echoing the structure of illuminated manuscripts. This piece provides insight into the artist's process, showing how he combined classical iconography with a modern, simplified aesthetic. The work remains a clear example of the European Symbolist interest in mythic, timeless subjects rendered with a focus on graphic harmony.
