A classic nishiki-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting two women in a domestic interior from the Eight Views of the Parlor series.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the series Eight Views of the Parlor (Zashiki hakkei), a clever adaptation of the traditional Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang theme. Harunobu translates the classical Chinese landscape motif into the domestic sphere of Edo-period Japan. The title, Clearing Breeze from a Fan, refers to the cooling gesture of the woman on the left, whose fan creates a gentle draft.
Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colour blocks in a single composition. This technical advancement is visible in the subtle layering of pigments on the kimonos and the architectural elements of the room. The figures possess the slender, ethereal proportions characteristic of Harunobu's work during this period. Their poses are graceful, suggesting movement within a quiet, interior space. The woman on the left wears a deep green kimono with a willow pattern, while her companion is dressed in a warm yellow garment.
The composition relies on a flat, graphic quality that emphasises the decorative patterns of the textiles and the linear structure of the shoji screens. By placing these figures in a domestic setting, Harunobu elevates the everyday activities of women to the status of poetic subjects. The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of colour balance and his ability to convey a specific atmosphere through minimal visual cues. The soft, muted tones reflect the aesthetic preferences of the time, focusing on harmony and balance rather than high-contrast drama. This work remains a representative example of the mid-Edo period print culture, where the boundaries between high art and popular culture were fluid.
