A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting a woman in traditional dress on a verandah, showcasing the technical precision of Edo-period surimono.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei is a fine example of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often distributed among poetry circles. Gakutei, a pupil of Totoya Hokkei, was known for his technical precision and his ability to integrate literary themes with visual art. The work depicts a woman in elaborate attire standing on a verandah, holding a fan. Her robes are decorated with repeating patterns, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Edo period.
The composition is balanced by the presence of a small, red lacquered stand, which provides a geometric counterpoint to the flowing lines of the woman's garments. In the background, a red railing separates the figure from a stylized view of clouds and pine motifs. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner is characteristic of surimono, where the text and image function as a unified aesthetic experience. The colour palette is carefully controlled, using muted tones of blue, red, and soft earth colours to create a sense of harmony.
Gakutei was a significant figure in the development of surimono, and his works are noted for their use of metallic pigments and embossing, techniques that elevated the status of the print. This piece demonstrates his skill in rendering texture and form, from the delicate folds of the fabric to the solid structure of the furniture. The print offers a glimpse into the refined tastes of the literati of the time, who valued the synthesis of poetry and visual design. It remains a representative work of the Ukiyo-e tradition, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation within a decorative setting.
