A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, featuring the Chōmeiji Temple and a narrative scene of fishermen on Lake Biwa.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II belongs to the series Miracles of Kannon. The composition follows a traditional format for Japanese narrative prints, divided into two distinct sections. The upper register depicts the Chōmeiji Temple, situated on the shores of Lake Biwa. The architecture, including the main hall and a pagoda, is rendered with clear, precise lines against a mountainous backdrop. The use of colour in this section is restrained, relying on soft tones to suggest the temple grounds.
The lower register focuses on a narrative scene involving two fishermen in a boat. They are shown in the act of casting a net into the water. The artist employs a dynamic approach to the figures, capturing the physical exertion of the task. The water is represented through stylised, rhythmic patterns, a common technique in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking to convey movement. The figures wear traditional straw skirts and patterned garments, providing a sense of period detail.
Textual elements are integrated into the design, with calligraphic inscriptions occupying the space between the upper and lower registers. These texts provide context for the miracle associated with the temple, linking the visual narrative to the religious history of the site. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the final image. The balance between the static, serene temple scene above and the active, human-centred scene below creates a contrast that guides the viewer through the narrative. This work offers a view into the cultural and religious practices of the Edo period, documenting both the physical geography of the region and the folklore that shaped the perception of such sites.
