A detailed ink preparatory drawing for the woodblock-printed epic, The Legends of the Dog Warriors, by Utagawa Yoshimune.
This hanshita-e, or preparatory drawing for a woodblock print, provides a glimpse into the production process of nineteenth-century Japanese book illustration. Utagawa Yoshimune, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced this work for the serialisation of Kyokutei Bakin's epic novel, Nanso Satomi Hakkenden (The Chronicles of the Eight Dog Warriors of the Satomi Clan).
The composition is divided into distinct narrative panels, a common technique in woodblock-printed literature of the Edo period. On the left, a figure stands in a contemplative pose beside a tall candle stand, around which a snake coils. The right side features two separate scenes: an upper register depicting a dynamic struggle involving a warrior and a beast, and a lower register showing a seated woman near an incense burner. The lines are precise and fluid, characteristic of the hanshita-e process, where the artist's ink drawing was pasted onto a woodblock and subsequently carved away by the block cutter.
Because this is a preparatory drawing, the ink lines retain a directness that is sometimes lost in the final printed version. The inclusion of Japanese text within the borders indicates the integration of dialogue and narrative description directly into the visual layout. The work reflects the popular taste for supernatural and heroic tales during the late Edo period. The figures are rendered with the stylised features typical of the Utagawa school, focusing on expressive gestures and patterned garments. This print offers an opportunity to observe the technical foundation of Japanese graphic storytelling, capturing the interplay between text and image that defined the era's literary culture.
