Beschreibung
A striking example of Abstract Surrealism by Roberto Matta, featuring elongated, hybrid figures within a fractured, psychological space.
Roberto Matta, a Chilean artist associated with the Surrealist movement, produced this work during his period of exile in the United States. The composition reflects his interest in psychological space and the intersection of human figures with mechanical, alien environments. Matta often described his paintings as 'inscapes', internalised mental topographies that reject traditional perspective in favour of fluid, shifting dimensions.
In this piece, the figures appear as elongated, skeletal entities. They possess a hybrid quality, blending organic anatomy with industrial components. The central red form acts as a visual anchor, contrasting with the muted ochre and mustard tones that dominate the background. Thin, precise lines define the contours of these beings, while the surrounding space is fractured by geometric planes and linear trajectories. This approach creates a sense of instability, suggesting a world in constant flux.
Matta was influenced by his architectural training, which informs the structural rigour present even in his most abstract works. The figures do not occupy a static room but rather a conceptual void where time and space collapse. By integrating these biomorphic shapes into a rigid, constructed environment, the artist explores the tension between the individual and the technological age. The work avoids literal representation, opting instead for a visual language that prioritises the subconscious and the irrational. It remains a characteristic example of his mid-career output, where he moved away from the dreamlike imagery of early Surrealism toward a more aggressive, cosmic abstraction.
