Roberto Matta, a Chilean artist associated with the Surrealist movement, produced this work during his period of exile in the United States. The composition reflects his interest in psychological space and the intersection of human figures with mechanical, alien environments. Matta often described his paintings as 'inscapes', internalised mental topographies that reject traditional perspective in favour of fluid, shifting dimensions.

In this piece, the figures appear as elongated, skeletal entities. They possess a hybrid quality, blending organic anatomy with industrial components.
