A delicate Persian miniature by Shaykh Muhammad, featuring a camel and its groom rendered in precise, calligraphic ink lines.
This single page illustration by the Safavid artist Shaykh Muhammad depicts a camel and its handler in a style characteristic of late 16th-century Persian miniature painting. The work focuses on the interaction between the animal and the groom, who holds the camel by a lead. The artist employs a delicate, calligraphic line to define the forms, prioritising clarity and grace over heavy shading or three-dimensional modelling. The camel is shown in profile, with its anatomy rendered through precise, economical strokes that suggest the texture of its coat and the structure of its limbs. The groom, dressed in traditional attire, is positioned alongside the animal, creating a balanced composition within the rectangular frame.
The drawing is set against a decorative border featuring gold flecks, a common practice in the presentation of Persian manuscripts and albums. This mounting provides a contrast to the spare, linear quality of the central illustration. Shaykh Muhammad was active during a period when Persian court art favoured refined draughtsmanship and the observation of daily life, often incorporating subtle details such as the jewellery worn by the groom and the harness of the camel. The composition avoids unnecessary background elements, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the figures. This approach reflects the aesthetic values of the Safavid period, where the economy of line was considered a mark of technical mastery. The work remains an example of the high level of skill found in Persian manuscript production, where individual pages were often collected in albums for private study and appreciation. The use of muted tones, punctuated by small areas of colour in the harness and the groom's accessories, maintains a sense of harmony throughout the piece.
