This fan leaf displays the expressive brushwork of Yang Wencong, a scholar-official and painter active during the final years of the Ming Dynasty. The work features columns of cursive script arranged across a gold-flecked paper surface, a format popular among the literati of the seventeenth century. The ink application varies in density, creating a rhythmic flow that guides the eye across the fan shape.
Yang Wencong was a member of the Nine Friends in Painting, a group of artists who sought to preserve traditional aesthetic values during a period of political instability. His calligraphy reflects the personal, unconstrained style favoured by scholar-artists of the era. The characters demonstrate a balance between speed and control, with fluid strokes that connect individual glyphs into a cohesive visual sequence.
