A fine art print of a 17th-century Chinese fan leaf featuring elegant running script calligraphy by the scholar-artist Chen Jiru.
This piece displays the refined brushwork of Chen Jiru, a scholar-official and artist active during the late Ming Dynasty. The work is executed on a fan-shaped leaf, a format that became popular among the literati for its portability and the challenge it presented to the calligrapher. The composition follows the natural curvature of the fan, with columns of characters varying in height and density to maintain balance across the surface.
Chen Jiru was known for his mastery of the running script, a style that allows for fluid, connected strokes while maintaining legibility. In this example, the ink varies in saturation, creating a sense of rhythm as the eye moves from right to left. The gold-flecked paper provides a warm, reflective background that contrasts with the deep black ink. This choice of material was common for high-status commissions or personal gifts among the educated elite of the period.
As a scholar, Chen Jiru often wrote poetry or philosophical reflections. The characters here demonstrate a relaxed, spontaneous quality, characteristic of the literati tradition where the artist's personal expression was valued over rigid technical perfection. The presence of a red seal in the lower left corner serves as the artist's mark, authenticating the work and providing a visual anchor for the composition. The fan format requires the viewer to engage with the work in a physical way, turning the object to follow the flow of the text. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink application, offering a clear view of the calligraphic technique employed by one of the most respected figures of the late Ming period.
