A 13th-century Persian ceramic bowl featuring black fish and foliate motifs set against a turquoise glazed background.
This ceramic vessel originates from the medieval Persian tradition, likely produced during the 13th century. The piece features a distinctive turquoise glaze, a hallmark of the period, which is overlaid with black underglaze decoration. The surface exhibits a network of fine cracks, known as crazing, which occurs naturally in the glaze over centuries of age.
The decorative scheme is organised into two primary zones. A continuous band of stylised foliate scrolls encircles the interior rim, providing a formal frame for the central imagery. Within the basin, the artist has depicted a series of fish swimming amidst aquatic vegetation. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, silhouetted forms of the fish and the luminous turquoise ground.
Such vessels were common in the Sultanabad and Kashan regions, where potters developed sophisticated techniques for underglaze painting. The fish motif carries symbolic weight in various cultures, often associated with abundance or prosperity. The fluid, calligraphic quality of the brushwork suggests a confident hand, accustomed to working on the curved surfaces of thrown pottery. The bowl demonstrates the technical skill of medieval artisans in managing kiln temperatures to achieve the specific blue-green hue, which remains a defining characteristic of this era of ceramic production. This print captures the texture of the original glaze and the precise placement of the painted motifs, offering a clear view of the historical design.
