Beschreibung
A 1909 still life by Henri Rousseau, featuring a bouquet of flowers in a white vase against a simple blue curtain.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter often associated with the Naïve or Primitivist movement, produced this still life in 1909. The composition displays his characteristic approach to form and space, where objects appear with a distinct, almost sculptural clarity. The flowers are arranged in a white, spirally fluted vase, which sits upon a dark, flat surface. Behind the arrangement, a pale blue curtain hangs in simple, vertical folds, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the colours of the flora to emerge.
Rousseau treats each element of the bouquet with individual attention. The purple rose, the clusters of orange berries, and the small white blossoms are rendered with a precise, deliberate hand. Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture the fleeting effects of light, Rousseau focuses on the static, essential nature of the objects. The lack of traditional perspective and the flattened depth are hallmarks of his style, which prioritised a direct, unmediated vision of the world.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to create balance through symmetry and controlled colour. The contrast between the dark table and the light blue background creates a clear division of space, while the white vase acts as a central anchor. Rousseau often painted such floral arrangements during his later years, finding inspiration in the gardens and parks of Paris. His work remains distinct for its lack of academic artifice, offering a clear, honest representation of his subjects. This print captures the specific textures and the muted, harmonious palette of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those who appreciate the clarity and charm of early twentieth-century French art.

Bouquet of Flowers - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
