A minimalist ink-wash portrait of Bodhidharma by the Japanese artist Unkei Eii, capturing the intensity of the Zen patriarch through expressive, fluid brushwork.
This hanging scroll depicts Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with bringing Chan Buddhism to China, which later evolved into Zen in Japan. Attributed to the Japanese artist Unkei Eii, who was active during the early 16th century, the work reflects the aesthetic values of the Muromachi period. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using monochromatic ink washes to define the subject against a sparse background.
Bodhidharma is rendered with a focus on his intense, piercing gaze and rugged features. The brushwork is deliberate and economical, capturing the essence of the figure through swift, calligraphic strokes. The heavy outlines of his robes contrast with the softer, more fluid application of ink used for his facial features and beard. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the monk's expression, which conveys a sense of spiritual concentration and detachment.
The upper portion of the scroll features calligraphic inscriptions, a common element in Zen-related art that provides context or poetic commentary on the subject. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned in the lower half of the frame, allowing the empty space above to suggest a meditative atmosphere. The muted colour palette, dominated by shades of grey and sepia, aligns with the traditional ink-wash painting style known as suiboku-ga. This piece serves as a visual representation of Zen ideals, where simplicity and directness are prioritised over decorative detail. The work remains a representative example of the religious portraiture produced within Japanese monastic circles during this era, reflecting the intersection of artistic practice and spiritual discipline.
