A meditative ink painting by Ikei Shūtoku depicting the monk Hotei gazing at the moon, rendered with minimalist brushwork and traditional Zen aesthetics.
This ink painting depicts Hotei, the semi-legendary Chinese monk often associated with the laughing Buddha, in a moment of quiet contemplation. Attributed to the Muromachi period artist Ikei Shūtoku, the work exemplifies the Zen aesthetic of economy and focus. Hotei is shown from behind, his large, rounded form occupying the lower portion of the composition. He gazes upward toward a pale, circular moon suspended in the upper field. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using sparse ink washes and controlled brushwork to define the figure and the surrounding space.
The composition relies on the tension between the solid, grounded presence of the monk and the vast, empty expanse of the paper. This use of negative space, or ma, is a hallmark of the period's ink wash tradition. The lines describing Hotei's robes are fluid and calligraphic, suggesting movement and weight without unnecessary detail. His posture, tilted back to observe the celestial body, conveys a sense of wonder and spiritual stillness. The inclusion of his characteristic large sack, upon which he rests, further identifies the figure within the iconographic tradition of the Seven Lucky Gods.
Ikei Shūtoku, a monk-painter associated with the Daitoku-ji temple in Kyoto, worked within the stylistic framework established by earlier masters of the ink tradition. His work reflects the influence of Chinese Chan painting, which prioritised directness and the expression of inner states over decorative artifice. The muted palette, dominated by shades of grey and sepia, directs the viewer's attention to the subtle variations in ink density. This print captures the original's delicate tonal shifts, preserving the meditative quality of the brushwork. It serves as an example of the austere beauty found in Japanese ink painting, where the absence of colour allows the form and the subject to communicate directly with the observer.
