A serene hanging scroll by Nagasawa Roshū depicting a boat on water beneath a moonlit sky, rendered in the traditional Maruyama-Shijō style.
Nagasawa Roshū, a student of the celebrated Maruyama Ōkyo, produced this hanging scroll using ink and light colour on silk. The composition follows the traditions of the Maruyama-Shijō school, which sought to reconcile classical Chinese ink painting techniques with a more direct observation of nature. The scene depicts a small boat navigating turbulent waters near a rocky shoreline, while towering, craggy peaks rise in the distance under a pale moon.
The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle washes of ink to define the atmospheric depth of the mountains and the mist. The foreground features gnarled pine trees and jagged rock formations, rendered with precise brushwork that contrasts with the softer, more ethereal treatment of the distant cliffs. A solitary figure stands on the boat, providing a sense of scale against the imposing natural environment. The vertical orientation of the scroll emphasises the height of the mountains and the vastness of the space, a common feature in East Asian hanging scrolls intended for contemplative viewing.
Roshū was known for his technical proficiency and his ability to capture the quiet mood of a scene. This work demonstrates his command of ink tonality, moving from the dark, defined shapes of the foreground rocks to the faint, ghostly outlines of the background peaks. The inclusion of the moon as a small, circular element adds a sense of stillness to the otherwise active water. This print captures the original silk texture and the muted colour scheme, preserving the balance between the detailed foreground and the atmospheric background. It is a representative example of the late Edo period aesthetic, where the focus remained on the harmony between human activity and the natural world.
