Beschreibung
A classic example of Henri Matisse's paper cut-out technique, featuring a simplified, bold blue silhouette of a seated figure.
Blue Nude II is a representative example of the paper cut-out technique Henri Matisse developed during his final years. Confined to his bed or chair due to declining health, Matisse turned to scissors and painted paper as his primary tools. He described this process as carving directly into colour. This method allowed him to bypass the traditional separation between line and form, creating a synthesis of shape and hue.
The composition features a seated female figure rendered in a singular, intense shade of blue. The silhouette is simplified, prioritising the rhythmic flow of the body over anatomical precision. Matisse uses the negative space of the cream-coloured background to define the contours of the figure, creating a balance between the solid blue mass and the surrounding area. The sharp, clean edges of the cut paper provide a sense of immediacy and clarity that distinguishes this work from his earlier paintings.
This piece belongs to a series of four Blue Nudes produced in 1952. Each version explores variations in the pose and the relationship between the figure and the frame. By reducing the human form to its essential geometry, Matisse achieves a decorative quality that remains grounded in the tradition of the figure study. The work demonstrates his ability to maintain a sense of movement and volume through minimal means. The flat application of colour and the bold, graphic nature of the silhouette reflect his interest in the decorative arts and his desire to simplify visual language. This print captures the essence of his late-career experimentation, where the act of cutting paper became a way to explore the relationship between light, space, and the human body.
