Blue Balls V is a work from the series created by Sam Francis during a period of hospitalisation in Switzerland. The artist, recovering from a severe illness, returned to a restricted palette of blue and white. This choice of colour reflects a shift toward clarity and physical restraint, moving away from the dense, multi-coloured compositions that defined his earlier career. The series is characterised by organic, cellular forms that float across a vast, empty white field.

In this specific piece, the composition relies on the tension between the negative space and the fluid, gestural marks. The blue shapes appear to drift or collide, with some forms exhibiting soft, translucent washes while others possess a more saturated, opaque quality. The drips and splatters at the lower edges of the larger forms reveal the physical process of the paint application, documenting the movement of the artist's hand.
