A classic Ukiyo-e portrait of a woman by Kaigetsudō Dohan, featuring bold lines and decorative kimono patterns typical of the early eighteenth century.
This work by Kaigetsudō Dohan represents the distinctive style of the Kaigetsudō school, which flourished in the early eighteenth century. The school is known for its focus on the bijin-ga genre, or pictures of beautiful women. Dohan, like other members of the group, prioritised the depiction of courtesans with a sense of physical presence and monumental scale. The figure occupies the vertical space of the scroll with a confident posture, her hands raised to adjust her hair.
The composition relies on bold, sweeping lines that define the heavy folds of the kimono. The artist employs a limited but effective palette, balancing the deep red of the outer garment with the cooler blue tones of the under-layer. Floral motifs are distributed across the fabric, providing a decorative quality that complements the figure's elegant stance. The background remains neutral, ensuring the viewer focuses entirely on the subject and the graphic quality of her attire.
Kaigetsudō Dohan was active during the Genroku era, a period marked by the rise of urban culture in Edo. The school's output was primarily aimed at the merchant class, who sought images that reflected the fashion and allure of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. This painting demonstrates the characteristic thick brushwork and simplified facial features that define the school's aesthetic. The signature and seal of the artist are present on the lower left, confirming the attribution to Dohan. This print captures the essence of early Ukiyo-e, where the emphasis was placed on the silhouette and the rhythmic arrangement of patterns rather than realistic anatomical detail. It remains a clear example of the formalised beauty standards prevalent in Japanese art of the early Edo period.
