A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, featuring a woman in a patterned kimono, rendered in the traditional urushi-e style.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu captures a moment of quiet intimacy, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e genre during the early eighteenth century. Toshinobu, an active member of the Okumura school, produced works that often featured bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, rendered with a distinct focus on line and pattern. The subject is depicted in the process of disrobing, her posture suggesting a relaxed, private atmosphere.
The composition relies on the interplay between the figure and the elaborate textile designs of her kimono. Toshinobu employs a variety of geometric and floral motifs across the fabric, which contrast with the smooth, simplified contours of the woman's form. The print is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where hand-applied pigments and sometimes metallic powders were used to add depth to the black areas of the composition. This technique provided a glossy finish that mimicked the appearance of lacquerware, a popular aesthetic choice in the Edo period.
The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the figure and the decorative elements of her attire. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper sections serves as both a compositional balance and a narrative element, typical of prints intended for the urban audience of Edo. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, blacks, and the natural tone of the paper, which has aged to a warm, muted hue over time. This print offers a glimpse into the stylistic conventions of early Japanese printmaking, where the emphasis was placed on the elegance of line and the decorative potential of the human figure within a domestic setting.
