A refined woodblock print from Kōno Bairei's 1881 series, featuring a crossbill in flight amidst botanical elements.
Kōno Bairei was a prominent figure in the Kyoto art scene during the Meiji period. This print originates from his celebrated series, Bairei hyakuchō gafu, or Bairei Picture Album of One Hundred Birds, published in 1881. The work demonstrates the artist's mastery of the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the observation of birds and flowers. Bairei was a teacher at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting, and his approach to these subjects combines traditional Japanese brushwork with a precise, almost scientific attention to avian anatomy and behaviour.
The composition is balanced and restrained. A crossbill is captured in flight, its wings spread to reveal the contrast between its muted red plumage and dark, patterned feathers. The bird is positioned against a sparse background, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the subject and the botanical elements. The plant stems and leaves are rendered with clean, deliberate lines, using a limited palette of grey and soft earth tones. This choice of colour ensures that the subtle hues of the bird remain the primary focus of the image.
Bairei's work reflects the transition of Japanese art during the late nineteenth century. While he remained committed to the techniques of the Maruyama-Shijo school, his prints also show an awareness of Western naturalism. The result is a series that functions as both an artistic study and a reference for natural history. The woodblock printing process preserves the fluidity of the original ink drawings, maintaining the texture of the paper and the delicate application of pigment. This print offers a clear example of the aesthetic values prevalent in Kyoto at the time, prioritising clarity, observation, and a quiet engagement with the natural world.
