This ink wash study depicts a badger, or tanuki, rendered with the economy of line characteristic of the Hokusai school. The artist employs varying densities of sumi ink to define the animal's form, using wet, gestural strokes to suggest the texture of fur and the weight of the creature's posture. The badger is shown in a seated position, with one paw raised near its head in a gesture that borders on the anthropomorphic, a common trope in Japanese folklore where the tanuki is often portrayed as a mischievous or transformative figure.
