The composition focuses on the animal from a rear perspective, a choice that allows the artist to explore the texture of the fur through varying densities of ink. The cat, wearing a simple collar, sits in a posture of quiet observation. Gyokushō employs the 'mokkotsu' or boneless method, where forms are defined by colour and ink washes rather than rigid outlines. This approach creates a soft, rounded appearance that captures the physical presence of the animal with economy and precision.
The negative space surrounding the figure is intentional, typical of the Japanese aesthetic tradition that values the relationship between the subject and the unadorned silk background. The subtle gradation of ink, from the darker tones of the ears and head to the lighter, translucent washes on the back and tail, provides a sense of volume.
