Beschreibung
A detailed graphite and wash study of the Italian coastal town of Amalfi, drawn by John Ruskin in 1844.
This drawing by John Ruskin captures the coastal town of Amalfi during his 1844 tour of Italy. Ruskin, a prominent critic and draughtsman, frequently travelled to the continent to document architectural forms and geological structures. His approach to drawing was rooted in the observation of natural and man-made details, often prioritising the structural integrity of buildings over atmospheric effects.
The composition focuses on the steep, craggy cliffs that loom over the town, a characteristic feature of the Amalfi coast. Ruskin employs a delicate graphite line to delineate the architecture, from the prominent cathedral tower to the smaller dwellings clustered along the shoreline. The use of light wash provides subtle tonal variation, suggesting the play of light across the stone surfaces and the rugged terrain. Unlike the more finished oil paintings of his contemporaries, this work retains the immediacy of a field study, revealing the artist's methodical process of recording the world.
Ruskin's interest in Italy was driven by his study of medieval architecture and his desire to preserve the visual history of these sites. In this sketch, the viewer observes his ability to balance the verticality of the mountains with the horizontal expanse of the beach. The figures in the foreground are rendered with minimal strokes, providing a sense of scale to the massive structures behind them. This piece offers a glimpse into the working methods of a figure who shaped Victorian aesthetic thought through his rigorous attention to the physical reality of his subjects. It remains a clear example of his disciplined draughtsmanship and his lifelong engagement with the Italian environment.
