An early 18th-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, capturing the kabuki actor Sawamura Imazō I in a traditional theatrical pose.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Imazō I in a characteristic pose. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating a studio in Edo that influenced many later artists, including Suzuki Harunobu. The work is executed in the style of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where hand-applied pigments and occasionally metallic powders were used to enhance the visual impact of the monochrome ink lines.
The composition features the actor kneeling before a decorative screen, holding a small ceremonial stand. The figure is rendered with the bold, calligraphic outlines typical of the period, prioritising the expressive posture and the specific patterns of the kimono over anatomical realism. The background is simplified, using a geometric grid pattern that provides a sense of interior space without resorting to Western-style perspective. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens and muted ochre tones applied to the paper, which has aged to a warm, neutral hue.
Shigenaga is known for his technical experimentation, and this print reflects his interest in the theatrical culture of the mid-Edo period. The actor is identifiable by his posture and the specific crests on his costume, which were essential for audiences to recognise their favourite performers. The print captures the ephemeral nature of the kabuki stage, translating the energy of a live performance into a static, graphic format. As a piece of historical documentation, it offers insight into the fashion and aesthetic preferences of the 18th-century urban population in Japan. The print remains a clear example of the early Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus rested on the stylised representation of popular culture and the refinement of woodblock printing techniques.
