A woodblock print from the 1750 Wakan meigaen by Ooka Shunboku, featuring classical figures and calligraphy in the traditional Kano school style.
This woodblock print originates from the Wakan meigaen, a multi-volume collection compiled by the Osaka-based artist Ooka Shunboku. Published in 1750, this work functions as a pedagogical resource, intended to introduce students and collectors to the stylistic conventions of various historical Japanese and Chinese masters. Shunboku was a member of the Kano school, and his work reflects the technical precision associated with that tradition.
The image displays two distinct figures, each presented with the calligraphic line work characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking. On the left, a woman is depicted in a seated posture, engaged in the act of washing paper, a scene often associated with the poet Ono no Komachi. On the right, a male figure sits in a formal pose, wearing traditional robes adorned with circular patterns. The composition is balanced, with the figures framed by vertical columns of kanji text that provide historical context for the subjects portrayed. The paper texture and the monochrome ink application are typical of the period, prioritising clarity of form and historical accuracy over tonal variation.
Shunboku played a role in the dissemination of artistic knowledge during the Edo period. By reproducing the styles of earlier painters, he allowed a wider audience to engage with classical aesthetics. The print demonstrates the economy of line and the focus on gesture that defined the era. It is a clear example of the educational function of printed books in eighteenth-century Japan, where the study of past masters was a primary method for developing one's own artistic practice. The work remains a primary source for understanding how historical styles were interpreted and preserved by later generations of artists.
