A woodblock print from the 1823 publication One Hundred Paintings of the Ogata Lineage, featuring traditional Japanese figures and calligraphy.
This woodblock print originates from the publication One Hundred Paintings of the Ogata Lineage (Ogata ryu hyakuzu), compiled by the artist Nakano Kimei in 1823. The work serves as a visual catalogue documenting the aesthetic traditions associated with the Ogata school, a lineage deeply connected to the Rinpa style. The composition features two distinct panels, each combining calligraphic text with illustrative imagery.
The left panel depicts a figure in traditional court attire, positioned beneath a block of stylised foliage. The right panel presents a seated male figure, accompanied by a circular motif representing the moon or sun above a simplified mountain form. The use of line is precise and economical, characteristic of early nineteenth-century Japanese book illustration. The figures are rendered with minimal shading, relying on the clarity of the ink lines to define the folds of their robes and their facial features.
This print reflects the period's interest in classical Japanese literature and the preservation of artistic heritage. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the era's printed books, where the written word and the visual form exist in a balanced dialogue. The monochromatic palette, typical of such publications, focuses the viewer's attention on the graphic quality of the brushwork and the arrangement of space within the rectangular frames. By presenting these figures in a formal, static manner, the artist captures a sense of historical continuity, linking the contemporary viewer to the cultural figures of the past. The work is a clear example of the technical proficiency achieved by woodblock carvers and printers during the late Edo period, who were capable of translating fluid brush strokes into durable, reproducible formats for wider circulation.
