A woodblock print from the 1822 book A Flowery Mirror of Beautiful Women, featuring a graceful figure and traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book A Flowery Mirror of Beautiful Women, or Bijin ryōka shū, published in 1822. The work features a characteristic Ukiyo-e aesthetic, combining figurative illustration with calligraphic text. The composition is divided across two pages: the right side depicts a woman in traditional attire, lifting a bamboo blind, while the left side contains columns of Japanese script.
The figure is rendered with clean, precise lines, typical of the period's printmaking techniques. Her posture is upright, and her garments are defined by bold blocks of colour, specifically the deep red of her outer robe against the lighter tones of her undergarments. The architectural elements, such as the bamboo blind and the suggestion of a screen behind her, provide a sense of interior space without relying on Western perspective.
Katsura Seiyō, the artist, focuses on the grace of the subject, capturing a quiet moment of domestic life. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the genre, where the poetry or prose serves to complement the visual narrative. The paper retains a warm, aged tone, consistent with early nineteenth-century woodblock publications. This print offers a view into the cultural interests of the Edo period, where the depiction of women, or bijin-ga, remained a primary subject for artists and publishers alike. The balance between the negative space on the left and the detailed figure on the right creates a harmonious visual rhythm, characteristic of high-quality Japanese book illustration from this era.
