A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utamaro II, depicting a courtesan surrounded by wisteria blossoms in a classic Edo-period style.
This woodblock print by Utamaro II depicts a courtesan, a figure central to the ukiyo-e genre of the Edo period. The artist, who succeeded the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, maintains the stylistic conventions of the school, focusing on the idealised beauty of women within the pleasure districts of Japan. The subject is shown in a graceful, slightly curved posture, a pose designed to draw attention to the elaborate layers of her kimono and the decorative patterns adorning the fabric.
The composition incorporates wisteria, a plant often associated with the spring season in Japanese art. The hanging clusters of the wisteria provide a vertical frame for the figure, balancing the horizontal emphasis of the courtesan's fan and the wide hem of her robes. The fan itself features a dragon motif, adding a layer of symbolic detail to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted greens, and subtle pinks, which are characteristic of the printing techniques of the early nineteenth century.
Utamaro II was active during a period when the ukiyo-e tradition began to shift toward more stylised representations. This print demonstrates the technical skill required to produce multi-block colour images, where each colour is applied via a separate carved woodblock. The lines are precise, defining the contours of the figure and the delicate blossoms of the wisteria. The work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time, where fashion, seasonal motifs, and the depiction of high-ranking women were primary subjects for the urban audience of Edo. The print is a representative example of the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women, a category that dominated the output of many artists working in the ukiyo-e tradition during this era.
