A refined ukiyo-e portrait of the courtesan Karatsuchi, captured in a delicate woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri.
This woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri depicts Karatsuchi, a high-ranking courtesan from the Echizenya establishment. Eiri was a pupil of the Kanō school who transitioned into the ukiyo-e genre, and his work often reflects a refined, aristocratic sensibility. The composition is a close-up portrait, focusing on the subject's head and shoulders, which allows for a detailed examination of her elaborate hairstyle and attire.
The subject wears a complex arrangement of hairpins, characteristic of the period's fashion for high-ranking women in the pleasure districts. Her kimono features a subtle pattern, rendered with the precision typical of late eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking. The artist employs a soft, muted colour palette, relying on the natural texture of the paper to provide a neutral background that draws attention to the subject's facial features. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of her face and the folds of her garments without unnecessary ornamentation.
Eiri's approach to the portrait is restrained. He avoids the exaggerated features sometimes found in the works of his contemporaries, opting instead for a balanced representation of the sitter. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper left corner provides context, identifying the subject and her place of work. This print is a representative example of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. It offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the grace and style of courtesans were documented with care. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in woodblock production, from the initial drawing to the carving and printing processes required to achieve such clarity of form.
