A precise example of Concrete Art, this geometric composition by Max Bill uses primary colours and a rigorous grid to explore spatial balance.
Max Bill was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, a movement that prioritised mathematical precision and the autonomy of visual elements. In 1-4 um excentrum IV, Bill explores the relationship between colour, form, and spatial arrangement. The composition relies on a rigorous grid, where rectangular blocks of primary colours—red, yellow, and blue—are juxtaposed with black against a neutral white background.
This work reflects the artist's background in architecture and industrial design, fields where logic and clarity are paramount. By stripping away representational imagery, Bill invites the viewer to engage with the physical properties of the paint and the structural logic of the canvas. The title itself suggests a departure from a central axis, indicating an interest in off-centre balance and the tension created by asymmetrical placement.
Bill studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he encountered the teachings of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. He later became a founding member of the Allianz group in Switzerland, which promoted the idea that art should be constructed according to objective principles. This piece is a clear example of his pursuit of visual harmony through calculated proportions. The interaction of the coloured segments creates a rhythmic progression across the surface, guiding the eye through a series of logical steps. There is no attempt to mimic the natural world; instead, the work exists as an independent object, defined by its own internal rules and geometric constraints. The clean edges and flat application of pigment demonstrate the artist's commitment to technical perfection, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the interplay of the constituent parts.
