Katsukawa Shunsen
Katsukawa Shunsen was a member of the Katsukawa school during a time when ukiyo-e artists began experimenting with Western spatial techniques. While many of his contemporaries focused strictly on the flat styles of actor portraits, Shunsen became a specialist in uki-e, or perspective pictures. These works used vanishing points to create an illusion of depth. This technique was often applied to large architectural interiors or wide outdoor scenes. He was a pupil of Katsukawa Shun'ei. He initially used the name Shunsen but later adopted the name Shunkō II.

Biography
His work often features actors in the hosoban format. This is a tall and narrow size that requires careful vertical composition. Shunsen balanced the theatrical energy of Kabuki with a sense of structural order. He produced series that followed the seasons, such as his Shimozuki and Minazuki prints. These placed figures within specific temporal contexts. His perspective prints, particularly those depicting scenes from the Chūshingura play, demonstrate his ability to map out stage settings. He used clear lines and distinct spatial layers to guide the eye through a composition.
Modern collectors find value in the way Shunsen bridged the gap between traditional Japanese subject matter and early experiments with three-dimensional space. His prints of boats near Mount Fuji or actors in religious dances offer a window into the urban culture of the Edo period. These works contain historical details regarding theatrical costumes and architectural styles. Because he worked across multiple genres, his portfolio provides a variety of visual styles. His prints document the technical transitions occurring in Japanese art at the start of the nineteenth century.
